Care Home – Emergency Roofing Works Following Storm Damage

Emergency

Roof Repair

Storm Damage

Overview

When severe storms struck the region, a local care home’s roof sustained significant damage — from overflowing gutters to missing slates, a cracked skylight and a damaged chimney.
R3 Direct was brought in to act fast, make safe, and restore the building’s integrity without disrupting the care home’s daily operations.

💡 Fast response, high safety standards, and long-lasting results.

Challenges

  • Emergency – Attend, make safe and secure. Measure for remedial works.
  • Urgency – Protect residents from water ingress and prevent further damage.
  • Multiple Damage Points – Guttering, slates, lead roofing, skylight and chimney.
  • Special Access Needs – Work at height in restricted spaces, ensure day to day care home activities are not disrupted.
  • Sensitivity – Maintain a calm environment for vulnerable residents and their families

Our Approach

Visit the Care home with our specialist roofing team on an emergency visit, make safe the defective areas keeping everyone safe whilst protecting the building.

We carried out a full inspection during the emergency visit, then prioritised the 5 areas of urgent repairs required, ordering tower scaffolding and Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) to maximise efficiency and ensure all works would be completed at the next visit.

1. Gutter Works

  • Cleared 20m of gutters of debris.
  • Resealed joints with Acrypol (high-performance sealant).
  • Re-graded a section running away from the downpipe to fix overflow issues.

2. Slate Replacement

  • Replaced missing slates in 10 separate roof areas.
  • Matched materials for a seamless finish as the building had listed status.

3. Lead Roof Redressing

  • Redressed 20m² of lead roofing.
  • Resealed edges to prevent wind uplift in future storms.

4. Chimney Repairs

  • Repaired roof section damaged by a falling chimney pot using flash band and Acrypol.
  • Installed a new chimney pot for safety and appearance.

5. Roof Window Preparation

  • While the Mobile Elevating Work Platform was available, we measured up for a replacement roof window to streamline a future installation.

Access & Safety

  • Mobile Elevating Work Platforms allowed safe, targeted work without the delay or cost of full scaffolding.
  • All work completed in line with strict health and safety protocols.
  • No disruption to residents, visiting families or staff during repairs.

Result

✅ All storm-related roof issues fixed quickly.
